SGM REUNION: A Call to Reunite, Regenerate, and Reimagine

From May 24 to 28, the beautiful Swiss mountains provided a perfect setting for an extraordinary event—the Social Gastronomy Movement (SGM) Reunion. Over four days, 36 passionate individuals from 22 countries gathered, each bringing their unique experiences and perspectives.

The reunion immersed us in our mission—to Reunite, Regenerate, and Reimagine SGM and our food systems. Celebrating seven years of SGM, we reflected on our collective achievements and charted a visionary path forward with renewed energy. Through insightful discussions, hands-on activities, and communal meals, we reaffirmed our commitment to fostering inclusive food systems and strengthening community bonds.

Highlights:

Day 1: Day 1: The event kicked off with an intimate dinner at dieCuisine, SGM’s Hub in Zurich, where local and global community members came together to cook and share a meal. This initial connection set a warm and welcoming tone as we reflected on SGM's journey over the past seven years, fostering deeper connections.

Day 2: We visited farms in Bachs, Zurich, immersing ourselves in the soil—planting, harvesting, and reconnecting with earth and place. This hands-on experience deepened our appreciation for food and highlighted the importance of connecting with nature. We also found inspiration in BachserMärt, a local food network hub and shop pursuing good food systems through small-scale production structures and collaboration.

Day 3: Starting with moments of self-reflection and connecting with others, we revisited SGM's milestones and shared visions for the future.

Day 4: The final day began with a refreshing hike through Switzerland's breathtaking landscapes. This communion with nature fueled productive discussions where we explored ideas shaping the future of SGM. From these rich discussions, several working groups emerged, each committed to driving forward specific areas of focus; Advocacy, Community Currency, Consulting, Knowledge Hub and Calendar, Nutrition Education, SGM Ambassador program, Structure and Membership Model, and, Youth representation.

Key Insights:

  • Unity in Action: Participants experienced the transformative power of solidarity, recognizing that united efforts drive meaningful change and tackle global challenges effectively.

  • Nurturing Relationships: Central to systemic change is cultivating authentic relationships based on trust, collaboration, and mutual support.

  • Facilitating Connectivity: SGM emerged as a vital hub for co-learning and connectivity, bridging diverse perspectives to co-create sustainable solutions and inspire collective action.

  • Shared Vision: Despite diverse backgrounds, cultures, and languages, participants shared a unified vision, establishing common ground and guiding principles for resilient food systems and social equity.

  • Small Communities, Big Impact: A profound insight was that significant change often originates from small communities. Local initiatives and grassroots movements illustrate how powerful transformations start on a small scale and resonate globally.

The SGM reunion was a beautiful reminder that change begins with a single plate. By uniting, sharing experiences, and breaking bread together, we can build a more compassionate and inclusive world. As we look ahead, we carry forward the lessons learned and connections made, ready to continue our journey towards sustainable food systems and stronger communities.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to this enriching journey. Together, we shape a brighter future—one meal, one conversation, and one community at a time.
