EMERGENCY SUPPORT

In times of increasing numbers of natural and man-made disasters, we need to be prepared to respond to crises and support vulnerable communities with food and water.

At the Social Gastronomy Movement (SGM), we stand united with our members during times of crisis in their communities and countries. Our members, deeply rooted within their local communities, are often among the first responders in local emergencies such as earthquakes or wildfires. Our members embody the resilience, compassion, and local action that characterize SGM. Because our members are local and will stay on the ground long-term, they are also able to support their communities in the recovery, when many international NGOs leave their countries.

How does SGM support emergency response?

Together with our allies such as the Zurich Foundation and World Central Kitchen, we support our local SGM members with connections, resources and visibility to provide food and water to people in need. Additionally, we have initiated an emergency fund, and we invite you to contribute: 100% of the funds collected will be directed to our members at the forefront of disasters, providing immediate assistance where it is needed most.

What does it look like in practice?

Immediately after a crisis hits the region of one of our members, they can reach out to SGM and apply for the emergency fund, we can then connect them with our international funders and partners. This way SGM can immediately channel funds and support to communities in need and facilitate collaboration between members.

Our success stories

In the past, we have supported our member organizations in various emergency response efforts, such as aiding Fundación de Gastronomía Social during the wildfires in Chile, assisting after the hurricane in Providencia, Colombia, and providing relief during the earthquake in Turkey.

Our efforts have also extended to Ukraine's war relief. For instance, we facilitated support for Adi in Romania, who received funds and collaborated with both World Central Kitchen (WCK) and Cuisine sans Frontières. You can view these contributions in the 2022 Annual Report.

Additionally, the 2023 Annual Report highlights our support in Turkey, where we worked with WCK and provided visibility, helping secure direct donations for essential supplies.
