Part One of the Universal Table: Dialogues of Change

Stakeholders from academia, government, civil society, agriculture, and farming joined around the Universal Table today. Prior to meeting at the table, each guest was asked to analyze both the causes and the symptoms by asking what conditions in their particular session is maintaining the status of food insecurity.

Key Takeaways

  • Regardless of the sector, we are all stakeholders in food security. cross-sector dialogue, intentionality, and embracing a human-central approach is crucial if we want to solve food insecurity as a global society.

  • Movements engage and mobilize individuals in the real issues , including the youth and those who are often left on the sidelines of the discussion. We need to ensure that these voices are represented at the table when it comes to

  • We can take a hard look at how our sectors are contributing to the maintenance of the status quo,  but we also need to organize in order to make tangible change. We must also tackle problems of climate change and socio-economic inequality if we wish to eradicate hunger.

  • The session closed on an optimistic tone, though it did leave us with one question: seeing that we can all notice what we are doing to maintain the status quo, why is it that we don’t disrupt it?

Every day to witness conversations like this, and encourage a lot of people to listen and engage, I do feel optimistic that I will see change in my lifetime -Cherrie Atilano, Founding Farmer of AGREA
